Shailaputri
"Daughter of Mountain"
Shailputri, the formidable goddess, wields her power with a flick of her pinky finger, effortlessly vanquishing the troubles and hindrances that plague her devoted followers due to harmful associations. It is a cautionary tale of how people unknowingly befriend others with hidden motives and concealed emotions, leading to unfavorable consequences.
In her first divine manifestation, Maa Durga takes the form of Shailputri, the daughter of the majestic Himalaya, from which she derives her name. She rides a mighty bull, symbolizing her strength and unwavering determination. With a trident held firmly in her right hand and a delicate lotus flower in her left, she radiates both ferocity and grace. As the initial deity among the revered nine forms of Durga worshipped during the auspicious Navratri festival, Shailputri holds a position of utmost significance.
In a previous life, she was known as Sati, the beloved daughter of King Daksha, and she became the wife of Lord Shiva. Reborn as the daughter of Shailraj Himalaya, she assumed the name Shailputri, signifying her connection to the mountains. She is also known by other names, such as Parvati and Hemvati. Once again, Shailputri joined in holy matrimony with Lord Shankar, becoming his eternal companion, mirroring their bond from her earlier existence. The might and influence of Shailputri are immeasurable, surpassing the limitations of mortal comprehension.
Shailputri Devi is worshipped on the 1st day of Navratri.
