Dev Diwali | Dev Deepawali

Dev Diwali also known as Dev Deepawali is an important Hindu festival celebrated mainly in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

Dev Diwali is celebrated on the Purnima(full moon day of the Hindu month) of Kartik, 15 days after the main Diwali festival. It is believed that on this day the gods come to earth to bathe in the holy Ganges and it symbolizes the victory of Shiva over the demon Tripurasura, so thousands of people take a bath in the Ganges in Varanasi. Offering oil lamps and worshiping one's ancestors on the Varanasi Ganga is culturally significant, it is not only a religious event but also attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists from all over India and the World with fireworks, music and traditional dance performances.

Dev Diwali has a deep religious significance in the New Tradition and is celebrated to honor the deities and to mark several major events in Hinduisium , the main reasons for its celebration are as follows:

- Shiva's victory over Tripurasura: The main significance of Dev lies in Shiva's victory over Tripurasura, a demon of the three worlds. or Carte Bernima and this event is celebrated as Tripura Diwali, on this day the gods are welcomed to earth by bathing in the holy waters of Poornima.

- The Kartika Purnima:  This day is considered very auspicious and it is believed that bathing in the Ganga or other holy rivers on this day will wash away sins and attain spiritual merit. Many pilgrims take a holy dip in the Ganges on this occasion for purification and salvation.

- Honoring Ancestors:  Dev Diwali is a time to honor ancestors in many parts of India. Rituals are performed to commemorate ancestors. Special prayers and offerings are offered to the souls of the deceased to bring them peace in the afterlife. This practice is called Pitra Tarpan.

- Cultural and Spiritual Significances in Varanasi:  Dev Diwali holds significant significance during the festival of lights as it is believed that the ancestors come to earth on this auspicious day, In Varanasi one of the holiest cities for Hindus.
